Circadian Lighting 101: Sync Your Home to Your Body Clock

Think about how light works outdoors. Dawn starts soft and amber, builds to bright blue-white at midday, then fades back to gold and dims into darkness. Your body evolved under that rhythm for millions of years. It's how your internal clock — the circadian rhythm — knows when to be alert and when to wind down.

Now think about how light works indoors. Flip a switch. Harsh, unchanging brightness hits your eyes whether it's 7 a.m. or 11 p.m. Your body gets confused. Alertness lingers when it shouldn't. Melatonin gets delayed. Circadian lighting fixes this.

What Is Circadian Lighting?

Light has two properties that affect your biology: brightness and color temperature (measured in Kelvin). Cool light — around 5000–6500K — suppresses melatonin. Warm light — around 2000–3000K — lets melatonin flow. Circadian lighting automates the shift: cool and bright during the day, warm and dim at night.

A 2014 Harvard study found that exposure to blue-rich light in the evening suppressed melatonin for about twice as long as warm light, and shifted circadian rhythms by three hours — essentially self-induced jet lag.
